Portland State University is a part of the Oregon University system and was established in 1946 as an educational institute for returning war veterans. The institute, which at that time occupied the space of a school, slowly began offering more advanced education and became known as a community college before it was formally recognized as a university in 1969 by the Oregon State Board of Higher Education. The public university’s urban campus is built on 49 acres and enrolls around 30,000 students each year in its undergraduate and postgraduate degree programs.
